Planned upgrade of the Lærdal Tunnel from autumn 2026

Currently available information updated 25.01.2026

The Lærdal Tunnel will undergo a planned upgrade from autumn 2026 to improve safety and infrastructure.

What we know so far:

  • The tunnel will be closed at night, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM,

  • The tunnel is scheduled to be closed at night while the work is underway, with bus transportation at set times to ensure access between Lærdal and Aurland. Emergency and ambulance services will have their own arrangements to allow them through,

  • Daytime traffic will run as normal, but expect some extra travel time, as there may be convoy driving or semaphores in parts of the tunnel, which is common during upgrade work.

Who does this apply to?

  • The closures only apply to travelers to or from Bergen (including Flåm, Voss and others),

  • Updates are shared continuously.

Alternative routes (summer)

  • Mountain road (Aurlandsfjellet) can be used, but it takes longer and is weather dependent,

  • Travelers should allow extra time and check road conditions before traveling.

Travel advice

  • Plan your trip so that the tunnel can be used outside of night closures (06:00–18:00),

  • Allow extra travel time, especially during peak season.

  • Please contact us for assistance with travel planning during night closures.
